BLACK ART - VAMPIRE (PM 7”) A classic dub from Lee Perry and the best released mix of Devon Irons “Ketch Vampire”, which appeared with different mixes on both 7” & 12”. This cut features a wicked horn line & stepping riddim track, all put through the Black Ark dub machine.

MICHAEL PROPHET & YABBY U - MASH DOWN ROME DUB – (Michael Prophet &Yabby U In Dub LP – Vivian Jackson). Singer Michael Prophet was one of the most potent forces in roots reggae during the late 70’s, and Yabby U brought out the best in him. Here, the combination of Prophet’s voice, Yabby U’s production & King Tubbys mixing provided the ingredients for a classic piece of dub.

TWINKLE BROTHERS – NEVER GET BURN – (White Label 12”). Archetypal Twinkle Brothers from 1979, burning lyrically, vocally & rhythmically. A staple of Shaka dances for years, with enough syndrums to nice up any session.

REVOLUTIONARIES - DON’T TROUBLE TROUBLE – (Revolutionary Sounds 12”). A different cut by Sam Bramwell, “Dread Ina Babylon” appeared on 7”, but this 1979 track is the definitive Shaka steppers - a menacing horn intro leading the way for Sly & Robbie to rhythmically mash down babylon.

AUGUSTUS PABLO + KING TUBBYS - 555 Crown St – (Rockers 7”). Many cuts of this track, vocal, DJ & dub appeared in the mid 70’s, all of which are good. No other music but reggae could produce a bassline like this, and King Tubbys worked on the hi-hats in his own unique way. Check the way he bends and distorts the haunting piano chop on this cut.

YABBY U - BEWARE – (Beware LP – Grove). This is dub at its most spiritual, African - influenced best, with Yabby U’s voice warning that “Beware, God is watching you,” while Skully’s bongos beat out a hypnotic backing, all topped off with sweet horns from Bobby Ellis & the late Tommy McKook.

MIKE BROOKS + SCIENTIST - MONEY IS NOT ALL – (Ist 2nd & 3rd Generation of Dub LP - K&G). Although this dub doesn’t feature Scientist at his most excessive, the rhythm track alone is magnificent enough for the young King Tubbys protege to work his magic on.

PRINCE JAMMY - JAMMYS A NO FOOL – (Fatman Dub Contest LP – Stars). The Aggrovators provide the rhythm for this dub of Johnny Clarke’s “Play Fool Fe Get Wise”, produced by Bunny Lee and originally released on 12” minus dub. The intro alone was the sort which made people buy the tune after hearing it for ten seconds.

BARRY BROWN – FROM CREATION – (Justice 12”) The same trio of Prince Jammy, The Aggrovators & Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee provide the ingredients for this dub, with Barry Browns high pitched sufferer vocal sliding in and out of the mix. Al Campbell cut another vocal of this riddim, called ‘No Sit There,’ but this is the only known dub of the track to be released.

PRINCE ALLA – CITIES (Freedom Sounds 12”). King Tubbys mixed this atmospheric slice of dub, with Soul Syndicate providing the rhythm and Prince Alla wailing about the “city with no pity,” adding jungle noises for full effect.
